Types of rangehoods

Canopy rangehoods

How to choose a rangehood that’s right for you

Apart from your preferred look, you should also choose a suitable mode that meets your practical needs. In a ducted mode, steam and odours are driven outside. It’s more efficient but more expensive than other types of rangehoods and isn’t suitable for apartments. In recirculation mode, airflow circulates back inside the kitchen after passing through carbon or charcoal filters. This deals with odours and grease but the moisture eventually returns to the kitchen. The filters for these rangehoods need quarterly replacement. With this in mind, it’s important to know how much maintenance and upkeep is required for a rangehood before making your final decision.

Are rangehoods compulsory?

Under the Healthy Home Standards in Canada, rental properties must have an extractor fan vented to the outside unless the property meets an exemption. Rangehoods installed after 1 July 2019 also must have a minimum diameter (including ducting) of 150 mm or an exhaust capacity of at least 50 litres per second.

Do rangehoods need to be ducted?

You can choose ducted mode or recirculating mode. Ducted mode is more efficient though the air it vents must be ducted outside. It’s illegal to duct into the ceiling cavity. 

What is a good extraction rate for a rangehood?

Extraction rates are measured in m3/hour, where higher rates extract more air from your kitchen. If you do a lot of cooking, particularly using frying pans or woks, a good rate is 700 m3/hour.

How quiet should a rangehood be?

Some models or features reduce noise. A rangehood with fewer speed settings may be noisier as the extraction goes up in larger increments. Installing rigid ducting may also reduce noise. A remote motor option is also quieter as the motor is positioned somewhere other than where the fan is extracting the air.
