Types of curtain rods

Single ringed curtain rod

A single curtain rod features a bar, usually attached to the wall at each end, with a number of rings on it. The curtains are sewn onto the rings.

Double ringed curtain rods

Double curtain rods have two rods, one behind the other. This allows for both light and heavy curtains to be installed.

Glide rods

Glide rods are a mix between curtain rails and tracks, and a ringed curtain rod. These run much more smoothly when used with heavy curtains.

Tension rods

Tension rods have a spring mechanism within them that causes the ends to push against the window frames or wall and hold the rod securely. No bolts or other attachment methods are required.

The advantages of high-quality curtain rods

High-quality curtain rods are often made out of more solid, stronger materials. This both gives them a certain gravitas and also allows them to hold heavier weights of curtains.

High-quality curtain rods are also often finished to a higher degree, with any manufacturing marks removed and, in the case of wooden curtain rods, surfaces waxed and polished to a low friction finish. This allows the rings to slide more easily over the curtain rail.

How to choose curtain rods that are right for you

Curtain rods vary depending on how much weight they are expected to carry. If you are using heavier curtains such as those made out of blackout material or thick brocade, you will want to use a fixed glide rod. Tension rods should be avoided when using heavy curtains, or in areas where children may play in the curtains.

If you want to be able to choose between lighter and heavier curtains, a double rail rod or combination rod and track curtain rail would be most suited for you.

How do I know what size curtain rod I need?

If you have curtains with existing rings, measure the inside diameter of the rings to know how thick the curtain rod should be.

How far should curtain rods extend past windows?

Curtain rods should allow the curtain to extend at least 5 cm past the window, not including room for rod finials.

How far above windows should you hang curtain rods?

As a rule of thumb, you should install curtain rods 10 to 15 centimetres above the window frame. The higher you install the curtain rod, the taller your windows will appear.

How much weight can a curtain rod hold?

This varies depending on curtain type, so check the packaging for a weight limit. Never hang anything other than curtains on a curtain rod, and do not pull downwards on curtains.
